How To Create a Garden Path With Slabs and Gravel

A path in your garden has several benefits. Your feet will be protected from the grass and the grass will not get destroyed due to repeated footfall. You can also use pathways to break up a garden and create different zones, for example, a vegetable patch or a seating area.

The type of material that you use to create pathways in your garden will depend on the sort of look that you are after, the amount of time it will take to make the path and the amount of money you are willing to spend.

Here are a couple of options that you could choose to incorporate into your garden.

Paving Slabs
Paving slabs are incredibly durable. If you are planning on creating a patio area, you may want to use this sort of material for both the patio and the paths leading into the garden. You can choose to create a solid pathway or place the slabs in single file.

There are different types of paving slabs that you can buy such as granite, natural stone, clay or slate. These all vary in price so the two things you would need to work out are which material is within your budget and how much coverage are you hoping for. If you prefer the more expensive materials, you can always design your garden so that the minimum amount of slabs is needed.

Gravel
Gravel is a really cheap and effective way of creating a path in your garden. It is also a quick way to alter the look of your outdoor space. There are different colours and sizes of stones that you can choose but beware of the finer gravel. It may look really pleasing to the eye but these stones can get stuck in the soles of shoes. Another disadvantage is that cats could mistake it for cat litter and you will end up with some unwelcome gifts in your garden.

In order for a gravel path to be effective it is important to prepare the ground. You will want to ensure that the area has been cleared of weeds. Dig up these plants and treat the soil with weed killer. Mulch sheets should be laid which will prevent any weeds growing back and this provides an excellent base for the gravel so that they do not sink into the soil.

Another way to keep the gravel contained is to create a raised border. You can do this by purchasing lawn trims that are made from wood or plastic or you can create a border using bricks.

After the initial cost of adding a garden path made from paving slabs or gravel, you will find that both methods need very little maintenance. They are suitable for all sorts of gardens and will look good all year round.
