Useful Tips on Watering and Caring for your Beautiful Lawn

A lawn must be cared for and maintained to achieve that picture perfect garden everyone loves. It doesnt carry its main purpose of home beautification; a healthy lawn also produces a relaxing space that can lift the human spirit. Interestingly, a survey conducted by Gallup revealed that 62% of US homeowners believe that investing in landscapes and lawns is more important than any other home improvement. According to buyers, a well maintained and healthy lawn adds 15% to the home value.

Cultivation, fertilizers and pest control are important in lawn care but water is such an important key to enrich the soil and grass. Correct lawn watering is essential to keep it healthy. Here are some useful tips on how to water your lawn properly:

1.Avoid over watering. Always remember that over watering is more disastrous than lack of water. Most grasses (e.g turf) are resilient, thus they can bear less water than an oversupply. Generally, 1 to 1.5 of water per week is required; this amount is just apt to moisten and soften the soil. You can buy a rain gauge to measure the amount of water that should be supplied for your lawn.

2.Choose the right time of the day. The best time to water your lawn is early morning from 8am to 9am and late evening from 10pm to midnight. These times are good because there won’t be excessive evaporation and no inefficient use of water because during these times, the temperature is cooler and less humid. Midday and evening lawn watering isn’t advisable since there are extreme temperatures that can cause diseases.

3.Check on the weather. Summer doesn’t normally mean watering your lawn automatically. Allowing the lawn to start to grow under a mild drought can strengthen its rooting. You can also monitor rainfall. Don’t water your lawn if you are expecting rain.

4.Choose and use the right type of sprinkler. Measure the amount of water your sprinkler is giving out. Sprinklers which spurt low to the ground are better than those fan type oscillating sprinklers that can lose water due to wind drift and evaporation before it hits the lawn.

The most important point to remember on lawn watering is to know the type of soil and the weather. You can experiment on what will efficiently work on your lawn. Keep records and create your best watering schedule. Be cautious though not to focus on watering alone but on each and every factor contributied to a healthy lawn.
