How to Stop Cats Using Your Garden as a Litter Tray

By gardener | May 9, 2009

How to stop cats using your garden as a litter tray is a common problem that most gardeners face at some time. This is especially a problem if you are not a cat owner yourself.

There are several methods that people have used with varying results. It is more a matter of trial and error with these methods as all cats like or dislike different smells.

Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Cats are supposed to dislike citrus smells as they have a keen sense of smell. Some people scatter small pieces of lemon or orange peel on the flowerbeds to keep cats away. It can be a bit unsightly but if it keeps the cats away then you’ve resolved your problem.

Another way of doing it is to get a sprayer and put a mix of orange and lemon in it and spray around the garden.

2. Moth balls are supposedly another way of preventing cats from fouling your garden or yard. However, NEVER use them. They are a pesticide and contain toxic substances that can harm the cat. If they are scattered round a garden they can also be mistaken for candy and eaten by young children.

3. Lavender has been used successfully by many gardeners although others have said it doesn’t work. It’s worth giving it a try because even if it doesn’t keep the cats from using your garden as a litter tray it has a most beautiful smell and can also be dried.

4. Stand a milk bottle or mirror in between the flowers – cats get scared when they see their own reflection as they think it’s another cat.

5. Try laying some soft netting down, held down with large stones or rocks, in rows between the flowers or across the lawn. If it’s on the flower beds you can sprinkle soil over the top of it to disguise it.

6. Commercial products from your local garden center, drugstore or hardware store. Ensure they are non-toxic, animal friendly and can be used on flower beds, vegetable patches and lawns. The last thing you want is an angry neighbor because you have poisoned their precious Tiddles.

7. There is a plant you can get called Scardey Cat. Ask at your local garden center or it can be bought on the internet.

8. Other products to try are garlic, pepper or olbas oil.

Avoid mint as cats absolutely love it.

Whatever you decide on it is not a good idea to kidnap the cat and hold it to ransom.

It is far better to stop cats using your garden as a litter tray if you use safe, environmentally friendly products.
