To Enhance the Curb Appeal of Your Home, Retaining Walls Are the Way to Go

By gardener | Oct 7, 2007

When it comes to retaining walls, there is certainly a lot of diversity. If you want to build a wall for yourself as a do it yourself project, you can make a retaining wall out of just about any material you can dream up. Alternatively, if you want to make a retaining wall more than just a couple of feet high, you will certainly need to call in a professional contractor, as they are highly trained in making a tall and stable wall to meet exacting measurements. As far as retaining walls go, there are essentially two ways to build one. You can make one that is simply held together by gravity or you can construct one with mortar or some other adhesive which keeps the wall from giving way.

Landscaping retaining walls have consistently been constructed with high quality earthen materials. Of these materials, the most common have been the brick retaining walls, the boulder retaining walls and the stone retaining walls. You can go back in time for several hundred years to find that walls constructed from these basic materials are still standing in their original greatness in nearly any climate zone. Recently, however, concrete block retaining walls have taken hold as a cheap and popular material to construct a wall from. Alternatively, wood retaining walls have never caught on as well as many would have hoped – mostly due to their difficulty to construct and possible strength issues.

If natural materials are not your thing, then you should check out modular retaining walls. These walls are built from the highest quality man made materials by companies like Keystone Retaining Walls and Anchor Retaining Walls. You can order your modular walls in a variety of shapes, patterns, sizes and colors for the ultimate in uniqueness. Furthermore, your modular retaining walls snap together safely and securely for added durability.
