If you have a back yard, chances are there are several good spots to place a bird feeder. These days, you can purchase bird feeders that come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Here are some ideas to consider when adding a bird feeder or two to your living space.
If you are looking to add a touch of whimsy to your garden, then a decorative bird feeder might be just the ticket. Currently on the market, you can find bird feeders that resemble everything from a miniature colonial style mansion to a rocket ship. There are even gazebo bird feeders that look exactly like the old bandstands that used to dot the town squares of many small towns around the country. Color schemes are just about as varied as the styles as well, so you can get something that will be sure to catch the eye of anyone who visits your garden.
Of course, your taste may lend to something more traditional. If that is the case, then let simplicity and utility be your guides when selecting a bird feeder for your space. Good old fashioned platform bird feeders provide plenty of room for bird seed, and also are easy for your feathered friends to perch on while they have a snack. A more practical model might be one of the squirrel proof bird feeders. These models allow the birds to reach the food, but the openings are too small for allow renegade squirrels to make off with the seed. They also tend to not have good toeholds for squirrels, although they work just fine for the birds.
Glass bird feeders have been around for decades and can be purchased just about anywhere. In truth, not all glass bird feeders are glass these days. Many of them are made out of durable clear plastic. One advantage of a glass bird feeder is that you can tell at a glance when it is time to add more food, or when the time has come to take the feeder down and clean it thoroughly. This is true even if the glass has been tinted a festive color.
Perhaps there are particular types of birds you wish to attract with your feeder. If that is the case, you can purchase a number of different feeders that are size and type appropriate for the birds you wish to attract. As an example, finch bird feeders come in a variety of styles, as do humming bird feeders. They do not require any special care, although each type will be designed with the particular bird in mind.
Tube bird feeders also have enjoyed a long history and still are quite popular in many parts of the country. Available in glass, wood, metal and plastic models, you can pick up this basic type of feeder in just about any retail outlet that includes a garden section. This is also a great choice if you are just beginning to toy with the idea of keeping a bird feeder in your yard. The expense will be minimal, so you can easily discard the project, or progress on to a more elaborate model when you are ready.
While we tend to think of bird feeders as being something we mount on poles or in trees, there are several window bird feeders on the market. These are great for maintaining just outside your window. Mounting to the window frame, you can simply open the window to replace the seed or to take down for cleaning.
With the many different types of bird feeders on the market today, you are sure to find one that will add just the right touch of fun to your back yard or garden.
