The Cactus Orchid

If you ever happen to find yourself wandering in the desert for forty years, a cactus can come in handy. Cacti can retain significant amounts of water and can be used to save the life of someone dying of thirst under the scorching desert’s hot sun. Armadillo and rattle snake may find the desert inviting, but humans, as a rule, generally do not.

Now, if you keep a cactus in your home as decoration, the use of a cactus is significantly diminished from its life saving duties in the desert. In blunt terms, a cactus can be one boring plant to have to stare at. However, if the cactus starts to sport a cactus orchid, then the cactus redeems itself and is officially worthy of being inside one’s home.

The colorful bloom of the cactus orchid provides a unique contrast to the somewhat drab green color of the cactus itself.

There is also another form of cactus orchid, but it isn’t actually a cactus at all. It is an orchid that grows primarily in Central America in wet climates, such as rainforests. These orchids can grow quite large, but bloom in a very short span of time. According to many experts, faster blooming cactus orchid variations will bloom in as little as one day.

Whether you purchase a cactus orchid or a cactus that will yield an orchid will ultimately rely on your preferences; however, it is important to note that the two plants require radically different levels of maintenance. While the former plant – the cactus with the orchid – will need to be either put in a window or exposed to constant fluorescent light and receive regular watering, the latter plant – the cactus orchid – will also require sunlight, but will not require careful attention to watering and soil nutrients.
