How To Choose An Orchid Pot

To be the proud possessor of a blooming Orchid plant, you have to familiarize yourself completely with the perfect growing environment for your Orchids. Orchids require adequate air movement and moisture up and into the root system to grow into healthy, flourishing Orchid Plants. Therefore, when you plant an Orchid at your home, you must imitate the natural growing conditions of the plant to ensure that it stays healthy the year-round. Since Orchid plants are usually grown at home for aesthetic purposes, the plant growers prefer to grow the Orchid plant in an attractive Orchid pot. A search on the net yields numerous websites that sell Orchid pots and even the nursery from where you buy the seedlings will usually have a selection of ornamental Orchid pots.

The Orchid pots are well designed to imitate the natural growing conditions of the plant. They are glazed pots with a number of air holes to ensure that the plant receives the adequate air movement that it essential for its normal growth. Orchid pots are commonly made out of terracotta or plastic. The ornamental orchid pots are available in a wide variety of colors, sizes and designs. Larger orchid plants require big-sized orchid pots to avoid drooping off of the plant. Make sure that you repot your Orchid plant after every two years, when the soil in which the plant is planted begins to break.

Plastic Orchid pots are more suitable for planting an Orchid plant indoors, since it is lightweight and might be blown over by a strong wind if it is placed outdoors. Also, plastic orchid pots are more durable, protect the plant against strong sunlight and the growing medium retains its moisture for a longer time than in a clay orchid pot. On the other hand, a Terracotta Orchid Pot is heavier, has one or many drainage holes and is more suitable for those epiphytic varieties of Orchid plants that are drought resistant. Since the growing medium never gets waterlogged in a clay pot, Clay pots are considered to be a better option for growing Orchid Plants.

Orchids pots should also vary in shape and size according to the shape of the orchid plant that they have to accommodate. For instance, a tall orchid plant such as the Chinese Cymbidium requires a very tall Orchid pot to accommodate its roots and Orchid plants that spread over a large area require an Orchid pot that is broad. If you match your Orchid plant with an Orchid pot that is appropriate and are careful about the light, temperature & moisture that the plant receives, you are sure to enjoy the visual delight of a beautiful & healthy Orchid plant for many years.
