Backyards and kids go together, or at least they’re supposed to. So, how does a parent incorporate a deck into the landscape and still make sure it’s kid friendly?

That’s a fairly easy undertaking when a little common sense goes into the design and good, old-fashioned childproofing efforts take place on the back end of the construction process.

If a child is in the home, this will be an important consideration in the design process. The deck itself will need to be big enough to accommodate the entire family in all likelihood, but it will also need to have a few extra safety measures included as well. In the case of small children, this is especially so.

If babies or toddlers are present, or will be, including a railing system is just smart if the deck is to be elevated more than a foot or so. Accidents can happen and even a fall from a few feet can cause serious injury, so the best way to avoid the problem entirely is to plan for it and take the offensive. This, too, goes for stairs. If a deck is elevated and stairs are in the design, make sure the entry to the stairs is designed to handle a child gate.

Railings themselves should be carefully considered and it’s likely with an elevated deck these will be included if kids are around. Make sure the railing slats are close enough together to prevent small arms and legs from getting stuck or at least close enough to protect from a child being able to slide through. Also go for a design that helps discourage climbing, if possible.

Choose materials for the deck that are smooth and rounded when possible. If wood has rough edges, be certain to sand it down and inspect it on a regular basis to prevent splintering.

With very small children, an overhang is also a good idea. The sun is not a child’s best friend over long periods of time, so some protection will help in combination with sun block.

A deck can be a great addition to any home for any family, but if small children are present or will be, it’s a very good idea to incorporate this into the plan. A deck meant for kids will require a few more safety measures, but a few steps taken up front can prevent problems down the road.
