Many people who are organizing their garden for planting are turning to the alternative of making a perennial garden. They feel that there are no many beautiful perennial flowers to choose from that a perennial garden may be the way to go. After all, once you’ve planted your perennial garden you’ll be able to enjoy the yearly blooms without the yearly planting!
You can start your own flowers from seed, buy them in pots already started or buy bulbs to plant. Any of these alternatives will give you a beautiful, colorful perennial garden you’ll be very happy with. So, if this is what you decide to do what’s the best way to go about it?
The first thing to do is choose what you want to put in your perennial garden. Maybe you want a whole yard full of tulips. Maybe its pansies, peonies or some California poppies, all bordered with baby’s breath. The varieties and colors available are almost too many to count. Go to your favorite nursery, or whatever store you like to shop that sells bulbs and pick as many as you have the room for. Be careful when buying for your perennial garden that the bulbs have been well cared for. If the store has kept them in a greenhouse they are likely to become damaged and will be less likely to bloom the following year. Bulbs that have been cold stored are better. When planting your perennial garden you’ll want to pick areas that have good drainage. Plant the bulbs six to eight inches deep, even spaced so when they grow there will be no overcrowding.
When planning your perennial garden decide whether you want patches of one type of flower or one color of a variety or flowers. Maybe you want many colors of the same flower. Or maybe you want to mix the bulbs in some type of pattern. Perhaps you prefer a really mixed group; waiting until they come up to see the colorful beauty that will become your perennial garden.
