Control Those Weeds

By gardener | May 15, 2007

The control weeds movement is generally misunderstood. Ok, actually it isn’t. No one likes weeds and there is no weeds sympathy movement.

When it comes to love of the environment, weeds are basically the only “greens” that totally get the shaft from any GAIA group on the planet. No one likes weeds. If the tropical rain forests were made of weeds, no one would donate ten cents to saving the rain forests. In fact, incendiary bombings of the rain forests would be generally encouraged. There is no one single individual on planet earth who is opposed to a control weeds program. So don’t feel bad if you are part of the control weeds movement.

By definition, as published on wikipedia, a weed is “an unwanted plant.” Geez, thanks. That was a lot of help. There have been instances where extremely expensive trees have been carted half way across the world and planted on a college campus only to have some nut take an axe to it in the middle of the night. While a rare and expensive tree may be iconic to some, to the loon with the axe, it is nothing more than a five hundred year old ‘unwanted plant.’ Ok, that’s an extreme example of the control weeds movement.

Yahoo’s dictionary offers a far better definition: “A plant considered undesirable, unattractive, or troublesome, especially one growing where it is not wanted, as in a garden.” That definition makes more sense in regards to the control weeds mantra.

So don’t feel bad if you wish to control weeds. Weeds disrupt a garden and make it look like a disaster area. For a garden to look decent, the number of wild growing weeds needs to be reduced to a manageable level. So, feel free to control weeds before they control your garden.
